A Fun and Joyful Harelaw Farm Wedding in Autumn – Emma & James

James & Emma’s Harelaw Farm Wedding

When Emma and James got in touch about their wedding at Harelaw Farm they told me they were after natural photographs that were ‘non cringe and FUN’! Well, that’s the kind of photo brief I like! My very relaxed, go with the flow, style of photography was perfect for them and I was over the moon when they booked me for their autumnal wedding.

Harelaw Farm is a unique Scottish barn wedding venue in Fenwick, Kilmarnock. It’s surrounded by green fields and beautiful Scottish countryside, but is just a short drive from the motorway and less than half an hour from Glasgow. Perfect for couples looking for a rustic wedding venue who want it to be easily accessible for guests travelling from all over the country.

This is such a great venue, I’ve photographed weddings here a few times and always have the best time. The barn buildings have stood on that spot since the 18th century. The team behind Harelaw Farm gave them a makeover in 2010, giving the barns a contemporary feel whilst still retaining the original features. It’s a great, stylish look.

Couples have the use of two buildings – the Wedding Byre and the Hay Barn. Spring and summer weddings can also take over the extensive lawn area and hold an outside ceremony. As Emma and James were getting married in October – and we all know what Scottish autumn weather is like – they sensibly opted to have their ceremony in the Wedding Byre with its exposed brick walls and cosy atmosphere.

James had the biggest smile on his face as Emma walked down the aisle towards him, tightly clutching her very proud mum’s hand. The wonderful Neil from Fuze Ceremonies was the perfect choice to lead their ceremony. He was fab, so lovely and welcoming to everyone. There was lots of laughter throughout and it was such a joyful start to the day’s celebrations.

As they exited the Wedding Byre – through a cloud of brightly coloured confetti – there were cheers from their guests who were all over the moon for the newlyweds. Emma and James had chosen to have a 1.30pm ceremony as the sun would be setting early. They wanted to have as much daylight as possible to enjoy the day with their guests, and for photos of course!

Autumnal Scottish Wedding Photography

Even though the weather was slightly on the chilly side – Ok, a bit of an understatement there, it was very cold! – we still managed to get some amazing portraits outside. We really wanted to make the most of the venue and its outside space. Emma and James were so flexible, we kept nipping outside for a few minutes and then heading back in to warm up. Luckily Harelaw Farm has lots of great indoor space for pictures, we took all their family photos inside the barn and there was ample space for guests to mingle and enjoy the day.

The weather sadly proved too much for their planned sparklers. It was so cold and windy that they just wouldn’t light. We didn’t let it get us down too much, I got some fab, relaxed night time portraits before we ducked back inside the Hay Barn ready to hit the dancefloor. The Jets were amazing and got everyone singing and bopping along all night.
