Photographing this Coventry Maternity Photoshoot was really something special. It’s a surprise gift for her husband for Christmas. Not only was she doing it for him, to remind him of the beauty of pregnancy – and how she was still the beautiful wife he married. She was also doing it for herself, to remind herself how gorgeous she looked, and the preciousness of carrying and protecting her unborn baby. She was ill in the beginning, as are a lot of woman – and wanted to embrace the positive, the beauty in it all, a few days before her gorgeous daughter was born.
Being an open minded, alternative life-loving mum to be, she didn’t want a bog-standard boring maternity session. She wanted off-beat.. something she was comfortable with, not needing to stand in the nude with a bit of silk around her. Not that there’s anything wrong with shoots like that, she simply wanted something natural – and that’s where my talents lie. She wanted something that was actually “her” , incorporating things she enjoyed, things that made her who she was. She wanted to incorporate the fact that even though she’s becoming a mum, she was still a person. A person who enjoyed reading, relaxing, playing with her cats and enjoying her garden.
We decided to make the session take place in her home, where she enjoyed spending time with her husband, two cats, and incredible bookshelf. We made use of her full house from living room to the hall, from the kitchen to the garden. One of their cats even got involved!
I love how she expresses herself freely and allowed me to photograph her vibrant hair, and awesome tattoos as is, without covering them up. Too often we get carried away by what others may think, especially when pregnant – and especially when being photographed. I overheard in a supermarket the other day, a mum shopping with her daughter. I really love this alternative mummy for flaunting her creativity and beauty. It was my absolute dream to work with her, I loved our session so much and would love to work with more mummies-to-be!
